New College Bradford receives 1,000 applications as student and parents look to September 2019

Bradford’s first purpose-built sixth form college, New College Bradford, has already received 1,000 applications for its first term in September 2019. Students currently in Year 11 have applied from over 40 secondary schools across the Bradford region, demonstrating the strong interest there is in specialist post-16 education across the wider community.

“We’re delighted,” said Principal Designate Stuart Nash. “We believe that this interest is because of the wide range of subjects we offer, our new campus, our ‘outstanding’ track record at New College Pontefract and the young adult environment New College will bring, a very different experience to a school sixth form.”

New College Bradford will be based on Nelson Street, five minutes’ walk from Bradford Interchange. The five-storey building is already taking shape, with the steel framework visible from the main dual carriageway. The college will hold 1200 students when it’s full, but in its first year it is only expected to recruit roughly half that number.

“Our official deadline for applications is 22nd February,” said Stuart. “If you haven’t applied yet, we’d strongly encourage you to do so. You can still apply after 22nd February and it’s very likely that many students applying after 22nd February will secure places. But with 1000 applications already there’s a good chance we could be oversubscribed. We’ll naturally give priority places to students that do meet the deadline so it’s best to apply sooner rather than later.”

New College Bradford’s next event is its second Open Day on Saturday 19th January 2019 at the Margaret-McMillan Tower in Bradford. The event, which runs from 9.30am to 12.30pm, will provide students and parents a chance to talk to teaching staff from all the subjects on offer.
