New College students benefit from session with the University of Cambridge

Can you say that you’ve had the chance to speak directly representatives from the University of Cambridge? Some of our students can!

This week, New College Bradford students both in Year 12 and Year 13 have been lucky enough to be involved in a session arranged by the University of Cambridge. The session aimed to encourage students to set their aspirations higher and consider submitting applications to both Oxbridge and Russell Group universities.

Included in part of the session was a presentation from former Bradford state school student Zainab Haider, who has recently completed her final year at the University of Cambridge. In the presentation, Zainab reflected on her experiences as a student at Cambridge, and gave her account of the application and interview process she had to go through. Zainab offered some excellent advice to the Y12 and Y13 students, including that the university particularly welcomes applications from those with a ‘more diverse background’ than had traditionally been the case.

In addition to Zainab’s presentation, further advice was provided from Cambridge school liaison officer Sian Bex, further preparing the students thinking about submitting applications. It has been a great chance for the students to gain an insight from somebody who has been in a similar position to themselves just a few years previous.

New College Bradford teacher and Oxbridge Co-ordinator Kerry Wood spoke positively about the session, stating how ‘it has been an excellent opportunity for the students’. Kerry also mentioned how ‘we (New College Bradford) look forward to launching the Higher Education course with Y12s’ later this year ‘whilst supporting Y13 students applying to Oxbridge universities’.
