New College Bradford supports its students through every step of their journey, providing ample opportunities to make the most of, which was showcased through a recent guest speaker session set up and administered by the IT department.
Matt Beaumont, who is currently working as a hardware and software troubleshooting expert for NHS Digital, came into college last month and ran an employer engagement session for Year 12 students. He spoke about troubleshooting methods, useful tools that can be used to identify errors and stressed the importance of keeping accurate logs and documentation. The content supports what the students have been doing in lessons as part of their Unit 1, which teaches about the ‘Fundamentals of IT’.
The second half of the session was an open Q&A, giving students the chance to ask Matt questions related to his work and education, potential careers available and routes into the IT industry. He explained what a typical day in his role might look like, and the important skills and attributes needed to be successful.
Matt studied a similar course to what the students are currently enrolled on when he attended sixth-form, so the knowledge and experience shared with them will be extremely useful. The session also provided valuable information about the potential avenues available to the students after their time at New College Bradford.
After the session finished, it’s fair to say the IT students left with a better grasp about next steps and the process involved. It’s just another example of the fantastic level of commitment from staff at New College Bradford when it comes to supporting their students’ learning.
